Thomas Aloysius Keller was born on 14 October 1955, in Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Camp Pendleton South, California, United States. Thomas was brought on to assist Keller’s mother when the latter’s cook became ill. Keller’s mother ran a restaurant. His family relocated to Palm Beach, Florida, when he was four years old, following the conclusion of the divorce that his parents had been going through. 

During the summers of his teenage years, he was employed at the Palm Beach Yacht Club, beginning his tenure there as a dishwasher and eventually advancing to the position of cook. It was in this restaurant that he honed his skills as a chef and became obsessed with perfecting the hollandaise sauce.
