Phil Hampson Knight was born on February 24, 1938, in Portland, Oregon, to parents Bill Knight, a lawyer who later became a newspaper publisher, and Lota Cloy Knight, Bill Knight’s wife. Lota Cloy Knight was Phil Hampson Knight’s mother. Knight spent his childhood in the Eastmoreland district of Portland, where he later graduated from Cleveland High School.
Knight went on to the University of Oregon in Eugene to finish his education. In just three years, he completed a business degree (B.B.A.) in 1959. Knight graduated as a “Distinguished Military Graduate” and obtained his Army Reserve Commission in the same year.
As a middle-distance runner at Oregon, he ran a mile (1.6 km) in 4 minutes and 13 seconds, which was his best time. In 1957, 1958, and 1959, he got varsity letters for his track performances. Phil Knight Career:
After receiving his diploma from the University of Oregon, Knight enlisted in the United States Army. He did his active service obligation for one year and then spent the next seven years in the Army Reserve. After completing his active military service, Knight enrolled at the Standard Graduate School of Business and received his master’s degree in business administration from the institution in 1962.
After that, he embarked on a journey to celebrate his graduation, which took him to Kobe, Japan. It was there that he first became aware of the Tiger brand of running shoes, which are produced by the Onitsuka Co. in Kobe. He was really taken aback by the top quality of the shoes at the low price that they were being sold at, and as a result, he was able to arrange a meeting with Mr. Onitsuka. Because of his efforts, Tiger’s western United States distribution rights were finally able to fall into his hands.
While he was waiting for the first Tiger samples to be sent to Portland, which took more than a year, he worked as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) for Coopers & Lybrand and then Price Waterhouse. He taught accounting at Portland State University as well (PSU).
When he finally got the Tiger running shoes, he sent samples to his old track coach at the University of Oregon, Bill Bowerman. In addition to placing an order for the shoes, Bowerman also requested that Knight join him in business. Blue Ribbon Sports (BRS), which would ultimately become Nike, was founded on January 25, 1964.
Knight, driving a green Plymouth Valiant, began selling Tiger shoes from the trunk of his car at local track meets in the Pacific Northwest. Blue Ribbon Sports paid him well enough in 1969 that he was able to leave his profession as an accountant and devote himself full-time to the company. The company was christened Nike at the suggestion of its first employee, Jeff Johnson, after the Greek winged goddess of triumph.
When Carolyn Davidson was a student in 1971, Nike paid her $35 for the design of their “swoosh” emblem. After that, she received an undisclosed quantity of Nike shares in exchange for her time. Knight built Nike from a fledgling shoe firm to one of the world’s most recognizable and successful companies during the next four decades. He stepped down as Nike’s CEO in November 2004, but he remained on the board as chairman. The Nike chairman announced his resignation in June 2015 and left the board of directors at the end of June 2016 after more than a decade of service.
He was also involved in the creation of a successful animation studio, Laika. The rapid expansion of the Will Vinton Studios animation studio in the late 1990s necessitated the search for outside backers. In 1998, Knight bought a 15% share in the company, and his son Travis became an animator for the company.
In the end, Knight purchased Will Vinton Studios and renamed it Laika in 2003. “Coraline” was Laika’s first feature-length stop-motion animated picture (2009). Since then, Travis Knight has been promoted to the position of CEO and President of Laika. Also Like: Demi Moore Net Worth
